Degsie’s dose I : Welcome to Degsie’s World

Well, this is the first instalment of my brand new column for www.gayleeds.co.uk, which has got me very excited because it gives me the chance to tell you everything that’s going on in Degsie World (As if you don’t hear enough of me rambling on over the mic most nights)!

Right then, Where to start? Well, first of all, let me give you a little background info…

Originally from the very posh city of Hull (No nasty comments please!), I first came to #gayleeds way back in 1989, where I started working at the busiest bar on the scene at that time, The Bridge Inn and in my first role I was glass collector (Yes, once upon a time I did manual labour)! I then progressed to bar worker and eventually became the manager and resident DJ. I have to say I well and truly fell in love with The Bridge Inn and have worked alongside some of the best people that have ever graced the Leeds Gay Scene.

In 1995, whilst still working at The Bridge Inn, I was offered a little slot of my own on Galaxy Radio, which lasted about a year and was a fantastic experience for me to build my confidence as a presenter on live radio.

Many of you will know me from The Birdcage, where I worked as the Resident DJ from 2003 to 2010, I also appeared in the drag shows there, usually playing all the parts no one else wanted! But it worked out great for me because I usually got all the comedy parts, even appearing on the stage one Christmas dressed as Mr Hankey the Christmas Poo, from South Park!

Then in 2010, The Birdcage sadly closed down and I came back to the place that I love, The Bridge!

You can now see me playing my tunes and listening to my angelic voice at The Bridge Inn and The Viaduct Showbar where I play Host to The fabulous Drag shows.

I also got given the opportunity to host the very successful Drag Idol event which I did for a few years, and now have my own event at The Bridge on Sunday afternoons called DJ Degsie’s – Sunday Roast, which is now into its fourteenth week and getting bigger and better each week.

Anyhow, I could tell you more about me, but I’ll save it for another time, don’t wanna bore you all straight away!

Coming up I’m gonna be hosting a Valentine Fund Raiser at The Bridge Inn which starts on Thursday 14th February with Judy & Leroy’s Love Karaoke, Friday 15th February we’ve got the Fabulous Miss Sordid Secret performing live on stage, Saturday 16th February is the big entertainment night, with a number of top stars from the scene performing live on stage, and finally closing on Sunday 17th February with my very own Valentine Roast which includes lots of fun & games such as Mr & Mrs, Quizzes, Bingo, Human Fruit Machine and lots lots more. Plus I’ve got loads of FREE beer and prizes to give away and everyone will get a fabulous Valentine Roast Dinner with Strawberries and Cream for afters and it’s all absolutely FREE!

Throughout these dates, we will be collecting donations from you all, and hopefully raise loads of cash for The Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity, and Leeds LGBT Pride 2013.

So please mark it in your diaries and come on down and join in the fun, all details are on The Bridge Inn’s Facebook page.

Also, don’t forget The Viaduct Showbar will be starting their fabulous Court Yard parties soon and I’ll be there entertaining you alongside all the other stars from the scene.

So that’s it from me for my first instalment, hope you all have fun at the events coming up, and I’ll see you all there soon.

Love to all

DEGSIE
