This one is bleeding obvious, we caught up with the rainbow hearted musician Jessica Rowbottom so that she could give us 10 inches of her time…
1) Describe yourself in three words:
Tall, Northern, Loud.
2) The love of your life?
My partner, wife, soulmate and sometimes manager Helen – the catalyst for my creativity.
3) Your typical Saturday night?
Depends on a variety of things, I don’t really have a “typical Saturday night” – if I’m doing a gig then I’ll be in front of an audience singing and playing! If not, then it’s dinner, TV and a few drinks.
4) Best ever moment?
The launch gig for my debut album, which featured a whole host of guest vocalists. They all managed to move diaries around and make it over to perform a one-off show which was absolutely astounding. Not to be repeated, and a night which will forever be remembered not just for the appearances, but also for the sheer chaos of trying to remember all our cues!
5) Describe your sexuality:
I’ve been touring this show “Rainbow Heart” which is a musical cabaret about coming out and the search for identity, and part of that is trying to define where I am on that spectrum – but the short version is, “lesbian”. I know there’s this vogue to say we’re “gay women”, but I’m all for keeping the word lesbian in regular usage.
6) The best thing about your body?
My legs, without a shadow of a doubt. I’m ridiculously tall, barefoot I’m 6ft2, and I’ve not got a bad pair of pins for a 40something year old.
7) Holiday Heaven?
It’d have to be a beach holiday, horizontal on a sun lounger on a quiet beach somewhere in the baking-hot sunshine.
Although I’d like it to be abroad (maybe South of France, around Cap d’Agde or somewhere in the Herault coast) the last time I actually went bikini-clad was on South Landing at Flamborough in that insane heatwave in June 2017.
8) Holiday Hell?
A hot city break. Dry heat in the middle of a city is oppressive – I used to live in London and hated it in Summer. That said, I had a disastrous holiday in Fuerteventura a few years ago – so dull, quiet, boring. It wasn’t even warm enough to get down to my swimmies either, I don’t fancy going back to that.
9) What’s Hot?
I’ve got a lot of time for spoken word at the moment too. I’ve been touring with two spoken word artists – my friend Helen Rhodes who’s known as The Thinking Chimp, and Geneviéve L Walsh who is an absolutely astounding goth poet – try and get to see them both if you can. Funny, bittersweet, sad and thought-provoking in equal measure.
Music – I’ll try anything once but I’ve been really digging the latest album from Hookworms. Bootsy Collins is on in the car. I keep going back to Saint Etienne’s last album Home Counties as well.
Telly-wise, I’m deep into Star Trek: Discovery. It’s gone back to the proper heart of Trek and perfectly judged.
10) What’s Not?
Stopping in box junctions – that really pisses me off.
QF1) Summer or Winter?
Summer. Every time. Winter’s too dark.
QF2) Monogamy or Promiscuity?
Monogamy. Too many arms and legs otherwise.
QF3) Dogs or Cats?
QF4) TV or Radio?
Radio: HeartFM in the car, BBC 6 Music in the house, Radio 4 at 6:30pm.
QF5) Home or Away?
QF6)Day or Night?
Day – you get more done.
QF7) The Pet Shop Boys or The Beastie Boys?
Pet Shop Boys every time (although the Beastie Boys album Intergalactic was pretty good).
